Algues are the plastic elements designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, are used to form weblike structures – ranging from transparent curtains to solid room dividers. Reminiscent of natural plants, they add an organic touch to a wide range of settings, while also lending structure to the space.
In 2004 Vitra algue was made as a room divider which is individually designed and remains so in use. The plastic injection moulded algae-shaped objects are available in sets of 25 pieces, which when joined together form a slight, not entirely opaque, mesh curtain of about 1 m². Thanks to individual connectors an algal web can be spun as required, and then broken up and respun as situations change.
